The Security Council is one of the central components of the United Nations and serves as the maintenance of international peace and security. The council comprises of 15 members with 5 permanent members (P5), China, France, United States of America, United Kingdom and Russian Federation, and 10 non-permanent members. The council members discuss and decide measures to take regarding breaches and threats to international peace and acts of aggression. Security Council is also one of the most powerful organs of the United Nations in its ability to mandate peacekeeping operations, institute economic sanctions and even authorize military forces. At TainanMUN 2016, the Security Council will be an extremely vigorous and intense committee with a high caliber of debate. It is highly recommended that schools select experienced students to represent delegations in the Security Council.

The Committee on Disarmament and International Security is a subsidiary committee of the General Assembly, which deliberates and discusses issues related to international disarmament and reduction of arms in ex-military zones. CDIS debates suggestive solutions to initiate reduction in jeopardous weaponry all around the globe.

The Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Committee serves as the third subsidiary commission of the General Assembly. SOCHUM discusses a range of issues, including social and humanitarian affairs to many human rights matters that affect people all over the world. It examines issues of fundamental freedoms and important social development questions.

The Economic and Social Council plays an essential role as the United Nations’ central platform for reflection, debate and innovative thinking on sustainable development. Established by the UN Charter in 1946, ECOSOC is the principal body for coordination, policy review, policy dialogue and recommendations on economic and social affairs, as well as for implementation of the internationally agreed development goals.

Created by the United Nations General Assembly on 15 March 2006 by resolution 60/251, the Human Rights Council is an inter-governmental body within the UN system responsible for strengthening the promotion and protection of human rights around the world and for containing situations of human rights violations and make recommendations on them. HRC possesses the ability to discuss all thematic human rights issues and situations that require its attention.
